Teaching

Teaching is the center of my work. My goal in every course is to get students involved in the process of genuine philosophical inquiry: the kind of active thinking that changes how students read, reason, and engage with the world around them. Over the past decade I've worked closely with the Innovation and Learning Center (ILC) at the University of South Alabama to develop and refine evidence-based teaching practices, including team-based learning, standards-based grading, and flipped classroom design. The result is a classroom environment that emphasizes mastery over performance anxiety and where students are challenged to actually get better at thinking, not just to pass a test. My hope is that, through learning and engaging with the material, my students will fall in love with philosophy and will carry that love of learning and critical inquiry with them for the rest of their lives.

All of my courses are offered in blended or fully online formats, and I have extensive experience designing rigorous, engaging courses through Canvas. My interest in epistemology shapes my teaching directly: I want students to leave my courses not just knowing more philosophy, but knowing how to evaluate what they know and why they believe it.
